Know thyself through a thorough self-assessment of your skills, abilities and unique talents in order to effectively sell your product (YOU) benefits and features to your target markets...potential employers.
Before you begin your job search, it is important to take time to identify the skills, abilities and attributes you possess. After all, you are the product in your job search campaign. If an employer hires you, it is because you have the skills and experience to meet the employer hiring needs. Highlighting the benefits of your product (you) and packaging yourself effectively gives you personal power and self-confidence to conduct a positive and productive job search campaign.
Take an inventory of your skill sets, experience, accomplishments, attributes and talents before you begin to prepare your resume. These skills can come from employment experience, volunteer work, academic training, extra-curricular activities and personal interests. Be objective when assessing your skills. Done objectively, you will be surprised at the amount of skills you can derive from your background that are suitable for many jobs within your field of interest.
Next, organize your skill sets into a resume format that best highlight your experience to your target markets (potential employers). Tell potential employers what you have done, how you have done it using what skill sets, and most of all, what you are capable of doing. List quantifiable results such as revenues you have generated, policies you have developed and implemented, process improvement initiatives you were involved in, and money or time you have saved previous employers. This demonstrates how your abilities and talents can directly impact a department’s bottom-line or assist the organization in meeting its objectives as a whole. Your resume should clearly reflect your unique skills, experience, education and accomplishments to demonstrate value (the reason a company would hire you) to potential employers.
